Working With Damaged Disk Images

Undisker allows you to work with damaged disk images. A damaged disk image is an image that contains errors in its internal structure, for example, a corrupted FAT, broken cluster chains or invalid file attributes or descriptors. These damages may be caused by hardware errors, operation system crashes; or because of corruption of the image file itself.

Undisker can open, view and extract contents of damaged disk images. When Undisker loads a disk image file, it always checks its file system integrity for errors, and then displays corrupted files and folders in red, as shown in the picture:

The main benefit of working with damaged images is the ability to restore files that are unrecoverable by any other means. For example, if you have a compact disk that was damaged by buffer underrun errors during the recording, you cannot access this disk from Windows, but Undisker allows you to make an image of this disk. To recover the files, you can make an image of this disk, open it in Undisker, and try to extract files from the image.

Warning: Attempts to open damaged files can lead to unpredictable results. This may be caused by possible errors in the program associated with that file.
